Family Stories
Each of us has a lifetime of stories. One of the highest honors we can provide our ancestors is to give voice to their stories.
When I was too young to comprehend the significance, my grandfather told me of when he and his fellow soldiers were captured by German forces while serving in World War II. Luckily, they escaped a short time after - if memory serves me correctly, it was the day after being captured. According to my grandfather, the guards responsible for their detainment were distracted, and it was then that he and other prisoners were able to flee German control.
It wasn’t until I matured and knew the complete devastation of WWII that I realized the significance of my grandfather’s service and story. I can’t imagine how terrifying it must have been for him and his fellow soldiers to be in such peril at such a young age.
Genealogy has provided the tools to research and document my grandfather’s service during World War II and find evidence confirming his capture. You can view the full report here.
It is an honor to help others reconstruct their ancestors’ stories.
